Of borders and lines !

“Nations have been sacrificing individuals in the name of the nation – and ‘nation’ is just a word. The lines that you have drawn on the map are not anywhere on the earth. They are just your game. But fighting over these lines that you have drawn on the map, millions of people have died – real people dying for unreal lines . And you make them heroes. National heroes.” – Osho

These lines seemed to jut out of the book and stare at me. Many years ago, I read the book A borderless world by Kenichi Ohmae, and I fell in love with the idea, that commerce would break down national boundaries. And we were seeing the first evidences of it back then. For instance, I vaguely http://pharmacy-no-rx.net/levitra_generic.html recall, he talking about how the turnover of Microsoft was twice as big as the GDPs of many countries. And how, such organisations wielded more relative power than ‘countries’ per se.

I sang ‘Imagine’ by John Lenon loudly and walked about, searching & hopeful of deliverance. Today, that idea seems to be coming at us with great speed. But clinging to this idea are the borders too. With much more emphasis and starkness. There are more borders than ever.

Over time, years and commerce, the heights and the lengths of the fences have just kept growing. Sure, commerce is changing the world. The fences are getting dismantled only to be relocated! With an ever increasing number of people becoming numb to their own souls, the boundaries, labels and stereotypes are getting pronounced even more!

Am not sure where this post is headed. Just like me. Standing at what seems like an approach to a weird crossroad.

Life & time slip by. Fence or no fence. Perhaps carrying all the answers between them !

  1. Kavi,

Good post. This has been there in my mind for many years. Yes commerce is bring them together as it has been in the past too.

a world without boundaries can never happen, because we are just substituting one set of boundaries with another..

This post has really left me thinking. To be frank, it’s hard to imagine a world without boundaries.

This reminds me of an interesting conversation I had with one of my friends.
When I came to US, he wrote to me and asked me to find oppurtunities for him out here. He wanted to come here permanently.
I wanted to know the reason. India today is full of oppurtunities, telecom, software, infrastructure.. you name it. Everything is in the boom time.
So I asked him, what makes him leave his motherland and come to uncle sam’s world permanently?
His answer was very simple “You were born in a small city, and you consider the whole of India as your mother land. I consider the whole world as my land!”

I think to some extent he IS right!

Nice post Kavi… The greed for power and supremacy makes people insensitive to their own souls… Hence all this border fights…

In many cases, boundaries are dimming. The European Union is one example, where inspite of hiccups, the whole of Europe is forming one single monetary union with easy moving between the borders. It is not so readily happening in other countries, but there is another thing happening. With so much emigration and travelling, there is a lot of inter-mingling of population starting to happen. It will happen, the blurring of boundaries will happen. After all, even in our neighborhood, Pakistan also pretends that Afganistan is an extension of its territory. 🙂

  8. in the basic rules of surviving, borders are needed to control the flow of raw material which means more that anything else in a political world. A single persons freedom and will or a generations dreams and aspiration is no match to the need of the world to go on another day. Sad but true, we must loose todays battles for the greater good.
